That would make sense, but Abbott would have been 45 when that film was made. He must have worn a wig and a lot of makeup to look like that photo. I've never seen the film, so I guess I'd better order the DVD from Amazon.

It may be the actor John Abbott, who played the conductor in the film. The music, as you surmised, is conducted by Franz Waxman who apparently did not appear on screen.
