The New York Public Library is pleased to offer *Short-Term Research
Fellowships* to support scholars from outside the New York metropolitan
area engaged in graduate-level, post-doctoral, and independent research.
Individuals needing to conduct on-site research in the Library’s special
collections are welcome to apply. Preference is given to applications
making a strong case for accessing special collections materials.
Fellowship stipends are $1,000 per week for a minimum of two and maximum of
four weeks.
Questions about the Short-Term Research Fellowships should be directed to
the curatorial staff in the area of the applicant’s interest. Please visit

*Eligibility:* Only U.S. citizens, permanent residents and foreign
nationals who have been resident in the United States for three years as of
January 31, 2020, and live outside of the New York Metropolitan Area may
apply.
*Key Dates:*
January 15, 2020: Application closing date
May 1, 2020: Applicant notification
June 1, 2020 – May 31, 2021: Award period
*Application:*
A complete application consists of four parts:
1.

2.
Project proposal (no more than 3 pages)

To include a general description or abstract of the research project,
its title and format and the applicant's contact details.
Applicants should
identify specific material(s) to be consulted during the desired dates of
the fellowship period. Successful applications will also include an
in-depth explanation of how collections existing only at the New York
Public Library are essential to the progress and completion of
the research
project.
3.
Abbreviated CV (no more than 2 pages)
4.
Professional letter of recommendation
Applications are submitted through NYPL's Fellowship Portal
<https://fellowships.nypl.org/home>, where applicants must first create an
account, upload a CV, and then apply for the Short Term Fellowships
specifically. Please note that only complete applications will be reviewed.
*Fellow’s Blog:* Each fellow is required to write a blog post of
approximately 500 words to appear on nypl.org about his or her project and
work completed at the Library by the end of the award period.

Now the unofficial part.
In crafting your proposal, pay particular attention to the sentence:
*"Preference is given to applications making a strong case for
accessing special collections materials."*
Special Collections materials means that few or no other institution has
such materials--in other words, primarily archival collections (though not
excluding unique materials such as other manuscripts, photographs or
archival recordings). Your proposal
will reveal that you are thoroughly familiar with the relevant collections'
finding aids and how they relate to your topic.
