That was my experience with the one Jico stylus I tried for the 681, a $60 elliptical. It didn't encourage me to try the more expensive SAS stylus.
I have found good results using one of the new VM series styluses from Audio-Technica. I replaced the original 150ml stylus with the VM450/VM750 replacement and like it much better than the original. At a cost just over $200, it's a tremendous bargain. Just watch out the loading capacitance - too much and the ATs get bright.
They also offer spherical and 78 styli, but I have no experience. Maybe this is the platform the custom stylus guys could adopt, though the small size of the cantilevers might make them hard to work with?
