Hello out there!
I wanted to send along an announcement about a very cool, interesting and historically significant event happening in Chicago and Champaign-Urbana in the coming days.
We here at the Media Preservation Labs at the University of Illinois (in association with the Sousa Archives and Center for American Music), along with associated partners, have recently completed preservation and restoration work in preparation for the 50th anniversary performances of the groundbreaking John Cage, Lejaren Hiller experimental computer music composition HPSCHD.
Composed by Cage and Hiller at the Experimental Computer Music Studios at IU between 1967-69, HPSHCD was a highly immersive, multimedia experience composed for multiple harpsichords and computer-generated sounds which premiered at the University of Illinois Assembly Hall (ie.basketball stadium) before 7000 participants on May 16, 1969. The 4 hour performance involved 7 live harpsichords, 208 tapes of computer generated sounds played simultaneously on 52 mono 1/4" reel-to-reel machines, projected moving and still images on rectangular and a 340 foot circular screen and hundreds of lights.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of this extravaganza of light, sound, imagery and art, there will be 2 FREE (!!!!) performances in Chicago this coming weekend (and one in Champaign Wednesday for anyone out in the corn fields).
Please see the links below for info, as well as some additional background info (including some cool pics of the original performance), below.
