Hi, Shai,
Graham has given good advice. I did have one Ampex DAT that was crazy
with dropouts. I baked it and it played fine. It is the only DAT that
I've ever baked, but I can say I have a 100% success rate <smile>.
There was another brand of DATs that were horrid from birth, but I don't
think they were the ones you mentioned. I've used lots of Maxell and KAO
and both were fine.
Also, I keep a bunch of Tascam DA-20 MKII's around and use those as the
first line of defense for transferring DATs. I keep my PCM-7030 for
tough things or where I want to use error logging.
Cheers,
Richard
