Dear all,
I just read the Nauck letter…a few times.
There is a truth that is pretty simple in my mind: we are living in a
moment where reckoning is happening. We as individuals, we as members of
organizations…we need to understand the complexity of what this moment
means to America and all Americans. We have to rise to this moment and
make sure we are anti-racist….to make sure our organizations take all steps
to join the ongoing movement to understand that the life of our country,
including the life of the world since the recorded sound, has been marred
with prejudice, racism and inequality. Work needs to be done to insure a
better reality for all people and that work is mandatory for all
organizations. It is more than political: it is right and it is needed.
Without doing the proper work, ARSC will be an organization that will not
be welcoming for next generations of members….it will be a mere relic.
I have served on the committee that has drafted the Code Of Conduct policy,
which is something that was truly needed for our organization. I am sure
there are members who did not understand the need for the policy, just as
there are some that do not understand the need for the statement opposing
racism. All I can hope is those members begin to understand why all of
this is needed: racism and sexism is alive and well in our world. It is
impossible to truly understand the impact of institutionalized racism and
sexism plays in all aspects
of our lives and must therefore be examined deeply.
I stand with ARSC for opposing racism and police brutality and am proud to
be a member. And there is more work to do.
