Good afternoon, all
I was contacted this afternoon by the DEI Committee. They felt that my
previous posting suggested that the chairs only responded to my offer to
join their committee due a tip-off regarding my Letter to the Editor.
That was not my intent, though the possibility certainly crossed my
mind. I simply meant to delineate the chain of events surrounding the
letter. To be more succinct, it was as follows:
Oct 5, 2019 - I read the letter (over the phone) to the full Board at
their fall meeting in Montreal
Oct 16, 2019 - I forwarded copies of the letter to the the DEI &
Operations Manual committees
I received no response to the letter from anyone
May 23, 2020 - I accepted an invitation to join the DEI Committee
I received no response from the committee
Jun 5, 2020 - The ARSC Statement was issued
Jun 5, 2020 - I decided to submit my letter
Jun 14, 2020 - I contacted Yuri, editor of the ARSC Newsletter
Jun 15, 2020 - I emailed the letter to Yuri
Jun 16, 2020 - The DEI Committee declined my invitation
~Jul 9, 2020 - My letter was published
It was necessary to show that the DEI chairs' response to me was emailed
/after /I submitted my letter, given that one of the three reasons the
letter was submitted was that I had not heard back from them. (In other
words, had they accepted my invitation before I sent the letter to Yuri,
I would not have submitted it.)
That being said, I accept the committee's assertion that they were
unaware of my letter before they responded to my May 23 email, and I
therefore apologize for any indication to the contrary.
Respectfully,
Kurt Nauck
