Dear Ben,
The recording in question can be heard at archive.org:
https://archive.org/details/78_softly-as-in-a-morning-sunrise_sigmund-romberg-and-his-orchestra-eric-mattson-victo_gbia0082866a
The singer, Eric Mattson, is best remembered for having created the role of
Enoch Snow in the original production of *Carousel*, in 1945. He was one
of many singers who toured with Romberg's orchestra as a vocalist, after
the Second World War.
All of the RCA *Gems From Romberg Shows *series (there were five volumes,
all conducted by the composer) have been reissued on two Naxos compact
discs, the first of which includes *Softly as in a Morning Sunrise*).
The orchestral version that you recall may be from a set of Sonora 78s,
arranged and conducted by Robert Russell Bennett, titled *Broadway Hits of
Yesterday* (Sonora MS-475). When Eli Oberstein acquired the Sonora masters
after the company went bankrupt, it was reissued, along with a companion
set, *Broadway Hits of Today* (Sonora MS-468) on a 12" Royale LP (1241),
credited to the Royale Concert Orchestra.
The full Royale issue, including the Romberg arrangement, can be heard on

Best wishes,
Richard Markowitz
