For tape gum residue on PVC, styrene, record jackets and labels my first line of attack is usually lighter fluid. It usually works for most goo removal and has never caused a problem YET but I always try to experiment in an inconspicuous spot first, especially with paper based surfaces.

One more chemical to throw into the mix as far as removing sticky adhesive type items...
My past wife was Australian. She always kept a bottle of eucalyptus oil in the pantry. It worked great to remove adhesives and labels from items and seemed to me to be less invasive than chemicals like goo-gone.
lighter fluid, etc. I don't ever recall any item we used the oil on melting or changing from the application. I doubt a Koala Bear would still be standing after ingesting goo-gone or lighter fluid but they live exclusively off of eucalyptus leaves.
