Please join the ALISE Technical Services Education Special Interest Group (SIG) for our session on Technical Services Education: Transformation and Advocacy - Breakout Session C.7 - during the ALISE virtual conference.

The panel presentation is scheduled for Wednesday, October 21, 2020, from 1:50 PM ET – 3:50 PM ET.

You must register for the ALISE 2020 virtual conference to attend the session. Access the Zoom link via the ALISE 2020 Annual Conference Homebase (you will need to login to access information on each ALISE session):

Though change has been constant in information settings for some time now, at the start of a new decade we are presented with an opportunity to review transformations in technical services education and how they may prepare professionals to deal with this continuous change. Education must consider not only how best to understand and serve end-users of systems (in order to anticipate their needs), but also how best to advocate for best practices in addressing needs, and how to implement best practices both ethically and with professionalism. This panel presents views on current and emerging issues concerning preparation and continuing education for technical services careers.

The first panel presentation will explore the notion of Diversity by Design (DbD) in technical services work and how it can be used in technical services education to advocate for diverse resources in libraries.

The second panel presentation will consider popular cultural visual materials, such as video games, graphic novels, and anime, as multi-media resources that support the mission of the library. In particular, from the perspective of end users of library systems, what do we need to understand about visual materials to provide effective access and support use?

The third panel presentation offers a brief overview of upcoming changes to the content and presentation of the descriptive cataloging standard RDA, while outlining new approaches to cataloging education and training that may prove useful for students and practitioners.

The fourth panel presentation will describe the recently released cataloging code of ethics document and provide guidance on how it can be incorporated into technical services coursework. In addition, the presenter will explore the document’s emphasis on advocacy by catalogers on behalf of users, creators, and the profession, as well as why educators must encourage students to be advocates for technical services.

The session will be moderated. The moderator will introduce the topic, providing initial background. Time at the end will be reserved for interaction with the audience.
