Cakewalk is now owned by Bandlab and is available free of charge. I haven't
used it personally for many years but current owners that I know seem very
happy with it and say that Bandlab have continued to develop it since they
took it over.
I use Reaper - mainly for audio but its MIDI facilities have always been
fine whenever I've used them. However, it doesn't come with many soft
synths so you will either need to plug it into an external keyboard/sound
module or download a suitable soft synth to generate audio.
