I’m doing a project of music performance tapes for a venue from the 70s and 80s. Most of them are reaals of Scotch 203 in their original boxes and reels. That is fairly easy to date. But half of the tapes are on unmatched reel and in random brands of boxes! O know the era they were recoeded in but not to provenance of the tapes. Some are Sony tape and reels, one Audiotape, several on generic reels in Vista brand boxes…
At least cassettes are rather distinctive and not mix-up-able! Having a database would be good, but prehaps old advertising would give you a date range. But since you rcorded them yourself, I think you would be the best authority on their provenance!

It would be a pretty coarse measure since cassette types tended to stay on the market for a period of years and could be used or reused decades later but setting up a reference database still sounds like a useful exercise. But why limit it to just cassettes? There are thousands of variations of reel to reel tape floating around as well. Sounds like an ARSC project.
