Sometimes, older technology can benefit in preservation of these records. 
The noise of the Pathe is unlikely caused by wear. Records that have been 
stored improperly can benefit by being played on the original equipment.
I will sometimes use a bamboo needle in my Victrola to polish grooves of a 
record in such condition. Not all records, however are tough enough not to 
be damaged by the bamboo, but certainly some records, particularly the ones 
pressed on tougher material. Victors and Columbia - some budget labels are 
softer and will be damaged. I also polish dry using a nail brush to activate 
the lubricants I the record after cleaning.  A record is like parts of a 
machine - better after being used. -Mickey
