If an author is telling you directly what their preferred form of name is, you can and should update their authority record.

Subject: [PCCLIST] Author's preference in choice of name
Hi all,
We got a request from Carlos Heìctor PenŞaranda Barrios, who is represented by authority record nr 97019057. He would like his full name to be used in catalog records. I explained to him a little bit about authority records and the criteria for choosing the authorized form of name.
The middle name “Heìctor” apparently doesn’t appear anywhere prominent in the item used in the 670 of the authority record, and it doesn’t look like any other OCLC record has an access point for Mr. PenŞaranda.
Does author preference trump the (thus far) absolute non-use of his preferred name on resources?
Complicating the problem somewhat is the fact that we have only tomo 2 of the book set noted in the 670, which, judging from LC bib record 97167816, Mr. PenŞaranda may have had nothing to do with. But if usage of “Heìctor” somewhere in the book set could make the decision clearer, I could try to get a scan or something.
Thanks!
