Diane,
The period subdivisions that free-float under art headings are covered by SHM H 1148. The first paragraph, headed TYPES OF HEADINGS COVERED BY THE PATTERN, says (among other things):
"The category does not include the heading Art , headings qualified by religion, nor headings for the decorative arts, performing arts, or architecture."
SHM H 620, sec. 2.b.2, says:
"Do not assign chronological subdivisions where they have not been established or are not covered by free-floating provisions, for example, after certain subdivisions such as –Description and travel."
The heading Dance is not covered by the art heading pattern, because dance is a performing art. No chronological subdivisions have been established editorially under the heading Dance. There is no provision for free-floating chronological subdivisions to be used directly under any category of heading that includes Dance. So you should not use chronological subdivisions directly under Dance. If the existing free-floating subdivisions on SHM H 1095 in the form --History--[period subdivision] are applicable to the work you're cataloging, you should use them under Dance.
Hope this helps.
