When we are about to do a DAT transfer, we manually clean the tape path with denatured alcohol using a Tex Wipe and we use high-grade Q tips on the tiny tape path parts. Rarely does any viewable debris come off during this routine.
When we do the transfer, we continuously monitor the error rate on the front panel and we also look at the RF envelope on a scope, looking for waveform amplitude and symmetry (similar to RF monitoring on VTR’s). With this playback procedure, we can quickly determine the issue when a mute or some other anonomly occurs (the RF will show a ragged display when tape creases go across the head, for example) which makes the whole process more efficient.
