Hello!
I’m working with Dennis Rooney and Seth Winner on a project to make some fresh, new, state-of-the-art digital transfers of a few RCA Victor discs made by the Minneapolis Symphony and their then-conductor Eugene Ormandy in 1934 and 1935. Some of these recordings have made their way to LP and CD in the past, but a handful have never made it so far.
I’m wondering if there are any ARSC members in the NYC area who might have some of the discs and sets we’re looking for and who would be willing to lend them to Seth Winner for transfer to digital files at his studio in Merrick, NY.
Specifically, we’re looking for Ormandy’s Victor recordings with the Minneapolis Symphony of Mozart’s “Eine kleine Nachtmusik” (Victor 8588), Mozart’s “8 German Dances” (Victor 1722 and 1733), Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 (Victor 8747- 51/set M-274), two Percy Grainger discs (Victor 1666 and 8734), and one Leo Sowerby side (Victor 1761 – the B side of a Smetana disc).
But if you have other Minneapolis Sym/Ormandy 78-rpm discs in excellent condition that you would be willing to lend us for this project, please let me know which sets or individual discs you have and would be willing to lend us for this purpose.
Also, if anyone has tapes of live aircheck or broadcast recordings of the Minneapolis Symphony/Minnesota Orchestra made earlier than 1975 in their private collections, please contact me as well. These would include broadcasts by local Minneapolis/St. Paul radio and TV stations like WCCO and KUOM in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, as well as other radio stations who recorded the ensemble on tour and recordings made for distribution abroad by The Voice of America.
We are gathering copies of all know broadcast recordings to add to a new Minnesota Orchestra audio archive being created at the University of Minnesota's Elmer Andersen Library.
Thanks for any help with this!
John Michel
