Not a pro engineer here, but I know a bit about MiniDiscs. Due to fear of
copying, Sony agreed to manufacture/sell only MiniDisc players to the US
where one could NOT download the file content electronically, forcing one
to transfer data in realtime. Supposedly this was not a problem for those
sold in EU and Japan, although I've not encountered such a model.
