Hi Howard, In my wave editor, I can see that the distortion is visible as
spikey bottoms in the wave form. Has any processing been done to the audio?
If so, I'd look at the original transfer for a start, and try very minimal
settings of any decrackle/declick processes.
I have found occasional issues with decrackle settings where I have had to
really drop the settings to eliminate the errors.
Also do you have anti-skating set for the given tracking weight? I'd also
suggest doing a slow transfer at 33 1/3 and then correcting the speed in the
computer. Mickey

I wonder what the collective wisdom regarding cartridges and stylii to
tame the distortion in
http://www.ampexguy.com/kiri/gorin/19410703.cs066384-1-mein.sehen.mein.wehnen.gorin.reibold.wav
might be?
I have been figuring that the problem is mis-tracking, and the trouble
with playing it well may be why it was never issued. (Note that the
low frequency thud at the end is in the recording, not from me
whacking the turntable or tonearm, and may also be why it wasn't
published.) This was transferred with an M44 and 2.8 mil truncated
elliptical, which performed best (actually I'd say "least badly") of
the eight or so stylii I have available. The disc itself is unworn;
wear isn't the cause.
Thanks for any insight.
