OK, I pulled Verve/Clef CD 521 650-2 off my shelf. All these years I've been listening around the noise to get to the music but zeroing in on the transfers they sound new (in 1992) and competent- though I wish they'd tried some different stylii on a couple of tracks. The problem lies in the fact that the restoration was supervised by Phil Schaap, a passionate but idiosychratic jazz critic and broadcaster who believed that virtually any filtering or processing was evil. I ran a couple of tracks through Click Repair and the most obnoxious noise went away. revealing some pretty well-recorded performances.
My advice: forgetĀ mp-threez and pretty, pricey vinyl. This is a fairly common CD (with the leaning tower of Pizza on the cover) and well worth the 9 bucks for a decent used copy.
