NOTICE TO CURRENT SUBSCRIBERS TO EAD
On Thursday, March 14, 1996, maintenance of the EAD (Encoded
Archival Description) electronic forum will be switched permanently
to new software at the Library of Congress. The software is called
"LISTSERV". Many users may already be familiar with the "LISTSERV"
system since many lists use it. LC has been using "LISTSERV" for
the EAD list since it was made available last year. During the
past few months the software has been running in a test mode with
EAD serving as a "guinea pig".
Although we originally thought we would convert the subscriber list
ourselves, to save you the trouble of having to do anything, there
are some complexities to doing that. Consequently, we are hereby
requesting that everyone interesting in continuing his or her
subscription to this list RESUBSCRIBE TOMORROW (Thursday, March 14,
1996) any time after 8:00 AM, Eastern Standard Time.
Subscribers outside of the Eastern United States and Canada, please
consider the difference in time zones before attempting to
resubscribe! (Subscribers in Asia and Australia, consider the day
too. Thursday in the U.S. is Friday in the Far East!)
Any messages sent to "[log in to unmask]" or to "[log in to unmask]" will
use the new software beginning tomorrow morning after about
8:00 AM. (The addresses "[log in to unmask]" and "[log in to unmask]"
will be retained as aliases to "[log in to unmask]" for a short
while.)
TO RESUBSCRIBE, DO THE FOLLOWING:
Send a message to "[log in to unmask]" with the following text:
subscribe ead <firstname initial? lastname>
You should substitute your first name, initial (if you have one),
and last name for the portion shown in angle brackets above. Do
*not* include any other text in the message. As before, messages
you wish to post to the list should be sent to "[log in to unmask]". You
will be able to post messages only *after* you have resubscribed!
You will receive documentation on "LISTSERV" commands when you
resubscribe. "LISTSERV" set command syntax and options may be
different from other systems you use. Where is some systems you
use the syntax "set <listname> mail <option>", the syntax LISTSERV
commands is:
set <listname> <option>
The "nomail", "ack", and "repro" commands are different in
"LISTSERV". In particular, it is worth noting that if you wish to
receive a copy of messages you post to the list, you will need to
change the default set option "norepro" to "repro".
We apologize for the inconvenience of having to resubscribe to this
list. We urge you to review the new "Welcome" message carefully to
see if there is anything new you should know that will make your
subscription easier to handle. If you have any problems with
resubscribing to this list, you can write the list administrator
directly at the address below.
