We (at Berkeley) are coming to the conclusion that there are many
different (and apparently acceptable) ways of using <tspec>, <colspec>,
and <spanspec>. While some flexibility is good, there is a great deal of
danger that we will all decide to do it differently, and make *easy*
interchange and sharing of finding aids problematic. We are thus coming to
the conclusion that we need to constrain the use of these elements, either
through the syntax of the DTD, or through the guidelines.
Currently we are working with DynaText and DynaWeb, and are coming to
consensus on the best use of these elements in that context. We do have
some Panorama experience, but not yet with EAD. We would like to share
notes soon with someone working with EAD and Panorama (Bill Landis or John
Price-Wilkin, are you there?). We would like to make sure we come up with
an approach that works with both of these platforms, and if there are
others working with other publishing tools, with those as well.
Is anyone this far along yet?
