I was interested in Robin Wendler's remarks in response to the message from
Rudy Witthus. In the past the leader/06 values were largely viewed as
controlling the 008 and the fields in the record, and were less carefully
considered for their search limitation function. With format integration
they really become primarily valuable for search limitation in the view of
many systems. When we established the 006 we picked up the seven format
values, not the 14 leader/06 values -- either could have been used.
I would like to see some comments on the use of the all of these positions
for search limitation -- what are the "types" that your users need. While
our flexibility for changing this area of the format is limited because of
the enormous expense and disruption, if we are going to try to improve the
definitions so that we can get "what we want" we need to know more about the
search limitation use.
This may be useless as everyone may have different "needs" expressed by
users and they may be terribly inconsistent from time to time, but it
behoves us to see if there is information that can help improve the
definitions. I would appreciate hearing from list subscribers on this.
Thanks.
