I received this comment from Brian Herbert, the son of Frank
Herbert. He wanted me to pass this along to our list. He does not
have any email address, however, if you wish to direct comments
back to him, I will be pleased to give notes to my friend.
"I don't usually reply to reviews or comments, but I will
take the opportunity to do so this time. I edited two books based
upon my father's writings. The title of the book of poetry that
David Heck asked about is The Songs of Muad' Dib, so you might
want to pass that information along to him. I would add that
there are some newly discovered poems of Frank Herbert, which
were not included in the first edition of that volume."
"The other book that you referred to is The Notebooks of
Frank Herbert's Dune, which is a collection of sayings from the
entire Dune series. It was not, as you suggested, 'an effort to
capitalize off the popularity of Dune rather than an attempt to
add anything of value to the series.' In fact, the book is
similar to another published collection based upon the writings
of Robert Heinlein, and is a compendium of the favorite sayings
from the series, for easy access by Dune fans. of my father asked
for such a collection, and it was largely in response to their
suggestions that I put it together. For me it was a labor of
love, since it involved the writings of my father. I read through
hundred of thousands of words in six volumes of the Dune series,
and assembled the quotations. They were not, as you suggested,
entirely from the epigrams that begin chapters. Many were much
more difficult to locate, as they were immersed in narrative."

Brian has published many of his own novels in SF. What I
appreciate most about Brian Herbert? His humor weaves through his
novels, that I have collected, and creates a craftsmanship in the
SF, as literature, that carries a great pride. What an honor for
his comments to our group!
