Hello Galen,
May I suggest Guy Gavriel Kay's fiction. He spins a reality all his own
and each of his novels have become more breathtakingly real. Tigana is
my favorite, a story of a country which has so angered a wizzard that he
places a spell which keeps anyone from uttering the name of the country.
Only those natives born in Tigana at the time of the spell can even
remember the name, and none can say it. It is a low tech fantasy with a
southern european flair. Each of his novels refer obliquely to the ones
he has written before as being a part of ancient history/myth. They are
places you can move into and stay, with characters you like and can cheer
for. They also frequently speak of patriotism and what one is willing to
do for one's country. His latest is "The Lions of Al-Rassan", also an
excellent and enjoyable read.
