Not well known and possibly no longer in print (if you find out, let me
know) are Tove Janssen's "Moomin" books. COMET IN MOOMINLAND would be
appropriate right about now; and MOOMINLAND MIDWINTER is my favorite.
They're unique books--and delightful and intelligent, and not at all
scary. You could also try Lloyd Alexander's Prydain series (THE BOOK OF
THREE, THE BLACK CAULDRON, etc.). Anything written by E. Nesbit (THE
FIVE CHILDREN AND IT). HALF MAGIC by Edward Eager.
