Two stories leap to mind: "The Last Defender of Camelot" by Roger Zelazny (in
the anthology of the same title) and "The Dragon Line" by Michael Swanwick
(in _Gravity's Angels_). Interestingly, these stories both focus more on
Merlin, Mordred, and Morgan than on Arthur per se. Come to think of it,
though, most of the medieval "Arthurian"/grailquest material (Malory,
Geoffrey of Monmouth, all those long-winded French lyricists) tends to focus
less on Arthur than on the goings-on around him (Lancelot, Gawain, Perceval,
etc.). Maybe someone as tediously virtuous as Arthur just doesn't make for
high drama. . . .
