To the names alrady eady mentioned by Don D'Am massa, I would add
the great Shirley Jackson and the much less well'k -known Anna Kavan
whose work is subtle and psychologically complex, but in the
realm of horror (see especially _Ice_). Also, in the realmo
of horror films, I don't think anyone mentioned the origia nal
_Cat People_--still good for a shiver. The later version
with Malcolm McDowell had some very good moments, but didn't
hold toege gehter a ther and forgot the great leass sson of its model--that
what is unseen is often more for rightening that n esp xplicit gore.
