Mike,
I agree with you. After winning the Illustrators of the Future award, I was
bombarded by tons of literature mostly highlighting the accomplishments of
Mr. Hubbard. Something about all of it seemed a little strange. The
literature made it sound like Hubbard was the greatest science fiction writer
of all time! And they (Bridge Publishing) continue to promote Battlefield
Earth as a major work destined to become a great classic.
Thing is, there are alot of big named professionals who support the
illustrators and writers contests including Bob Eggleton, Frank Frazetta,
Roger Zelazny, Larry Niven, Frederik Pohl, Anne McCaffery, Algis Budrys,
Gregory Benford, Robert Silverberg, Paul Lehr and others. Many of whom I met
while at the awards ceremonies. I don't know if they support or believe in
Scientology and I didn't feel it was my place to ask them at the time.
I have noticed that Hubbard is not mentioned much in articles I read about
the great science fiction writers. So I guess that says something about how
he is regarded.
