Two directions for this post.
My path to SF was a bit different. My early and middle school years had
me interested in non-fiction, mostly dealing with WW II and more
specifically aircraft of that era. I subscribed to OMNI magazine starting
with issue #1 for its science fact and ignored the fiction. (I still have
all of the early OMNI magazines by the way, in excellent condition)
A freind of mine would borrow the magazines for the fiction, and finally
talked me into reading a few of the stories. I became intrigued. He then
loaned me my first SF novel, actually a collection of 3 novels, called
"The Foundation Trilogy". I feel I started off on the right foot!

Woah!!! Probably illegal? That hobby is stronger than ever today. In fact,
you can still purchase the small "model rockets" as was popular years ago,
or you can move ahead to what is called "High Power Rocketry", which allows
you to become certified to fly rockets weighing hundreds of pounds, and
sending them up over 37,000 feet! (the present HPR altitude record)
I personally have a couple of smaller examples of the larger rockets
hanging in my work room at home since they are too big to stand up inside.
One a 7ft tall 2 stage Nike-Apache, and a 10ft tall Sandhawk. This hobby
is far from illegal, in fact the propellants that we use, the storage,
transportation, etc... are regulated by the BATF. These are the same
type of propellants used by the Space Shuttle SRBs.
Sorry for going off topic a bit, but I couldn't let that alone.
