POSITION AVAILABLE
POSITION TITLE: User Services Librarian
GRADE: Associate Librarian
STATUS: Exempt, Full-time
REPORTS TO: Supervisor, RAND Library, Washington DC site
POSITION SUMMARY:
Performs a variety of professional level user services including reference
and literature searching, document delivery, end-user training, staff
orientations, and collection development and in performing some technical
processing tasks. Assists Site Supervisor in coordinating all activities
with other RAND library system sites.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
-provide reference, current awareness and SDI services
-perform literature searches using a variety of printed and on-line
information retrieval systems
-identify and locate sources of research materials for local acquisition
or interlibrary borrowing
-assist and instruct patrons in use of all information resources including
the Library's integrated on-line system, CD-ROMs and the Internet
-assist in promoting library services to clientele through a variety of
methods including user orientations and workshops and development of user
aids
-assist in the maintenance of library system web pages and links to
relevant information resources provide first level trouble shooting for
micro-based library applications
-serve as member of the RAND Library system collection development team
-assist Supervisor in directing activities of paraprofessional staff and
student assistants.
-provide backup to all other library staff activities including classified
document accountability when necessary
-keep current with emerging information technologies and trends perform
other duties as assigned
EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: MLIS or MLS from an ALA accredited program; some familiarity
with reference and literature search techniques using both printed and
electronic information resources; strong computer skills and familiarity
with Windows, IOLS, the Internet and its navigation tools; excellent
analytical and communication skills, both written and oral; ability to
work cooperatively in a demanding and changing environment with diverse
levels of staff and ability to organize work flow in an efficient manner.
Experience in a special or research library setting preferred; experience
with the Washington, DC information community a plus. US Citizenship is
required.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Hiring range $ mid thirties. RAND offers a
competitive salary commensurate with education and experience. Benefits

THE LIBRARY SYSTEM: The RAND-wide Library system provides effective and
responsive information services in support of RAND's research activities
using a broad array of printed and electronic resources and services.
With a staff of 30.5 FTE in Santa Monica, California and 3.5 FTE in
Washington, DC, the system has more than 300,000 volumes in its
collections and acquires more than 3500 current serials. The Library has
a state of the art on-line catalog system (Sirsi's STILAS/UNICORN System)
with full integration of acquisitions, circulation, accountability, OPAC,
serials management, WebCat and several other utilities. It also maintains
a central data facility which has more than 900 archived datasets and
related documentation.
