Ms. Hirons mentioned that at LC, notes are given in tag order for
serials. The rationale is that much time would be required to determine
AACR2 order, and that the order created would be lost due to notes
created by other fields, e.g., 780/785.
Amen sister!
But it makes one wish a little more thought had been given to assigning
the field tags. Fields 506 and 540 (both restrictions on use) are, for
example, separated by a sometimes lengthy 520. Let us hope one or the
other will be made obsolete, and any distinction between the two
preserved by making the remaining one a repeating field with indicators
or by the use of subfield codes. Does *anyone* understand the difference
between these two fields? I get as many variations in explanation as
when ministers try to explain the Trinity.
