The NASA John F. Kennedy Space Center Library has an immediate opening
for a LIBRARIAN. The Kennedy Space Center Library is operated by a
contractor, Sherikon Space Systems, Inc.
NATURE OF WORK:
Assists Senior Librarian in answering reference questions, performs
manual and computer-assisted literature searches, performs duties
required in operation of circulation desk, assists library patrons in
locating materials and in use of online public access catalog, CD-ROM
databases, indexes and abstract journals, and maintains shelves in
Reading Room. Gives direct aid to patrons in search of scientific and
technical information. Assists in collection maintenance and
development. Circulates materials and maintains borrower registration
files.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
Provide direct reference service to library customers in support of
their work related duties. Contact may be in person, by phone, email,
or fax. Circulate materials and maintain borrower records using
integrated library system. Demonstrate / teach library customers how to
use print and online resources available in the library. Assist the
Senior Librarian with collection development.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Masters degree in library or information science; or Bachelor's Degree
plus five (5) years experience providing professional Reference
Services; or, at least nine (9) years experience providing Reference
Services in a professional capacity.
Essential Skills:
- Experience conducting literature searches using computer databases
preferably DIALOG.
- Understanding of the collection development theory and practice.
- Familiarity with computerized integrated library systems preferably
STILAS
- Experience answering simple and complex reference questions
- Ability to teach library patrons use of online public catalog, CD-ROM
databases and other reference tools
- Self motivated and able to work with a minimum of supervision;
excellent organizational skills
Desired Skills:
- Experience selecting, using, and troubleshooting CD-ROM databases
- Personal computer literate preferably in a Windows environment
- Working knowledge of Internet resources
- Knowledge of the space program
Salary: $26,000 to $27,000 annually
