Replying to Jennifer's thoughts on lesbian writers and lesbian women appearing
in sf -- one thing I've noticed in this vein is, whenever women are in
"traditional" male roles -- esp. cyberpunk/hacker roles (Melissa Scott/Pat
Cadigan spring to mind), the women are often portrayed as lesbians, and yes, I
know these authors are gay (Pat Cadigan, anyway), but I also wonder if it's
used as a convention to "justify" having these women in these traditional male
categories -- as a straight woman interested in down-and-dirty computer stuff,
it makes me wonder if I'm in the "wrong" orientation category as well as the
"wrong" job category! (Just joking, that's why the word "wrong" is in quotes,
see?) Anyway, I think this is an interesting topic, and I'm pretty happy that
we get into real life on this list, rather than being so politically correct as
to live in fantasy-land --
