I have devoted a chapter to Tarkovsky in my forthcoming book on science
fiction directors, which I recommend you check out. He has done two other s-f
films, THE STALKER based on the Sturgatsky's "Roadside Picnic," and THE
SACRIFICE, which ruminates about religion and the end of the world. Lem's
books have been published in the U.S. for years, but only Michael Kandel has
done a great job of translating them, and has since become an s-f author in
his own right. The book is more metaphysical and philosophical than the film.
All of Tarkovsky's works are slow and deliberately paced, from MY NAME IS
IVAN, about a Russian boy with a bleak past and future with Russian (not
German) soldiers on the Eastern front to THE SACRIFICE, so the patience
impaired should avoid. These films are ponderous, giving plenty of time for
contemplation as they unspool, subtle details are given great import by the
pacing. Some people liken it to watching paint dry, and others compare his
work to watching dry paint. Rewarding for thinking audiences--all others
should avoid, but one of the great international s-f filmmakers.
