This  vacancy  is  open  to  male  and  female  candidates.  Applications

the Director-General and may be assigned to any activities or offices of the
Organization.
Duties and responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Group Chief, the incumbent will be
responsible for most aspects of day-to-day operation for providing a variety
of information services to users and will, within the Virtual Library,
WAICENT/INTERNET context, specifically: participate in collaboration with
staff and users in the development, implementation, conversion and
maintenance of information acquisition or indexing and cataloguing or
delivery systems; ensure the appropriate acquisition, conversion,
development, access and preservation of the multimedia document collections;
participate in collection development and information access and conduct
related studies in consultation with Divisional Officers and Library
staff;    provide professional support to the FAO component of the AGLINET
document access services;     collect, select and implement a variety of
electronic and cataloguing and indexing, storage and archiving services for
the Organization; select and implement a variety of electronic information
alert and supply services for the Organization; maintain liaison with the HQ
and Field staff in the provision of information acquisition or indexing and
cataloguing or delivery services; maintain constant liaison with outside
cataloguing, indexing, collection development and document delivery services
and related software producers; ensure that requirements are taken into
consideration for updating future services and software releases;
participate in planning the upgrading of related systems with other staff in
the Division and the Computer Division (AFC);     develop and implement
contingency plans for backup systems and alternate procedures to maintain
services with staff in the Division and AFC; participate in the design and
development of custom applications in database software and services with
system vendors, document suppliers, AFC and staff in the Organization;
perform other related duties as required          Qualifications and
experience - Essential
University degree in agriculture or the life sciences, and post-graduate
degree in Information and/or Computer/Library Science or related field of
specialization. Training in the design and use of publisher and full text
document storage and retrieval systems, electronic publishing using SGML,
HTML, or other applications for information and document databases in a
networked environment.  Three years of progressively responsible
professional experience in implementing and managing an electronic document
delivery service, working with and assisting in designing and maintaining
full text electronic document retrieval systems, document scanning,
conversion and distribution. Experience with MS-Windows and/or
Windows95-based applications in a local area network environment is highly
desirable. Supervisory experience required.  Working knowledge (level C) of
English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge (level B) of one of the
other two.  Initiative, high sense of responsibility and ability to plan and
organize work.  Ability to collate, analyze and evaluate information.
Knowledge of BASIS, TECHLIB-plus or other automation systems for collection
access, document delivery and management. Knowledge of online retrieval and
delivery of electronic documents. Computer literacy and ability to use
effectively word processing and office automation equipment. Courtesy, tact
and ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with
people of different national and cultural backgrounds.
Qualifications and experience - Desirable
Knowledge and experience with publishers of electronic documentary systems
and with outside document delivery services.

.Academic Qualifications
Please give details of the level of university degrees obtained, indicating
the subject(s) of specialization, the year of award and the name and
location of the academic institution. You will be expected eventually to
request the university to provide FAO with a written resume of academic
work.
Knowledge of Languages
Please list the languages with which you are familiar, beginning with your
mother tongue, indicating the extent of your knowledge as:
     excellent/good=     working knowledge (level C)
     fair/slight =  limited knowledge (level B)
With a working knowledge (level C) of a language, you will be expected to
work independently using the language required, to prepare a variety of
written communications (correspondence, reports, working papers, etc.), to
participate actively in meetings and in work-related discussions, etc.  With
a limited knowledge of a language, you will be expected to follow
work-related discussions or meetings, even though you may wish to intervene
in another official language. You will be expected to participate in simple
conversations, to use the telephone, to read and understand work-related
texts and to write simple communications, etc.
Experience

post adjustment) from US$ 55943 to US$ 71829 (without dependents) and from
