I believe that the novel you are describing is DARK UNIVERSE by Daniel
F. Galouye which was published in 1961. I do not recall who the
publisher was but it is considered a landmark novel in the genre. My
copy no longer exists but I did get it in a used book shop several years
ago. Surely Cleveland has some good used bookshops or genre shops that
might have this book. The web also has some used book sources but I
suspect you would pay much more. Good luck and good reading.
