Robert E. Howard was one of the most popular of the early _Weird
Tales_ authors, along with H. P. Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith. Howard
created Conan the Cimmerian, among other characters.
_The Whole Wide World_, currently opening, stars Vincent
D'Onofrio as Howard and Renee Zellweger as Novalyne Price. (Novalyne
Price Ellis wrote "One Who Walked Alone", a memoir about Howard.) The
movie is reviewed by Terence Rafferty in the January 27 _New Yorker_.
D'Onofrio has been in several big-ticket movies (_Malcolm X_,
_JFK_, _The Player_), but his biggest role that I remember--vividly--was
his second. He plays the hapless Leonard "Gomer Pyle" in Stanley
Kubrick's _Full Metal Jacket_ (1987).
