The idea of coding both the intellectual and the physical using the <c0x>
elements may work for those archivists who believe, as Steven M-G does,
that the physical is subordinate to the intellectual, when everything is
neatly housed in one kind of container in one location. In my mind, boxes
and folders and volumes and map cases are simply methods of housing. They
have nothing to do with intellectual control. So, for the sake of
argument, I thought I'd throw out the following chunk of the finding aid
for the Norman Bel Geddes papers. (Caveat: This finding aid is *really*
ugly and it's definitely not standard for us, but it wasn't my idea. I
would make some major changes to it if we were going to mark it up, but
this *is* just for the sake of argument. So, no finger-pointing and
snickering, ok?)
The Bel Geddes papers are intellectually very simple--we have files for
virtually all of his design work, arranged by job number. However,
physically they are very complex. As you can see, there is lots of
oversize material, models, and framed artwork, photographic negatives, as
well as routine correspondence relating to each job. There are also
materials that were fire damaged and required special housing. There may
be as many as a dozen or more different types of housing needed for the
materials relating to a single job, so in EAD-speak, there would be several
different *physical* logics going on here. Assuming that the files
relating to the theatrical production for The Miracle (below) are a
subseries (<c02> in this case), how would we tag such a complex physical
structure?
