ahh, History! the "small triangualar shaped solering iron" that
comes to my mind was used to heat bind spine labels - one
modern step away from the stylus-type electric pen used to
transfer the hand-scribed call number using foil paper.
Maybe the Smithsonian?

The "small triangular shaped soldering iron with wooden

to "brand" the call number or other information into the binding.
Using
it with a piece of colored foil paper would make the brand the
color of
the foil.
