OCLC CATALOGING FIXED FEE PRICING TO BE AVAILABLE IN JULY
DUBLIN, Ohio, Feb. 7, 1997--Beginning in July, following the conclusion of a
three-year test, OCLC Cataloging fixed-fee pricing will be available as
another pricing option to online full-cataloging members.
The Cataloging fixed-fee price is calculated using annual transaction
averages based on historical activity and includes all online and offline
cataloging products except non-OCLC derived tapeloading and major microform
products*searching, setting holdings, exports, cards, tapes, profiling, some
88 product codes in all. The fixed fee period will be July through June.
"While Cataloging fixed-fee pricing won*t necessarily be cheaper, there is
the advantage of a known cost on an annual basis," said Jennifer Younger,
assistant director for technical services and liaison to the regional campus
libraries at Ohio State University Libraries, which tested fixed-fee
pricing. "Known annual costs make it easy to assure budget allocations will
be sufficient to meet expenses."
Dr. Younger said fixed-fee pricing also can help libraries improve
workflows. "It*s possible to fine-tune workflows in an atmosphere conducive
to experimentation when the corresponding expenditures can be reviewed on an
annual basis," she said.
"Cataloging fixed-fee pricing responds to libraries* desire for predictable
OCLC pricing," said Chris Grabenstatter, acting manager, OCLC Collections
and Cataloging Services. "The best candidates for OCLC*s Cataloging
fixed-fee pricing might include libraries with stable or increasing activity
or libraries that want to try out new services, such as the OCLC PromptCat
service, OCLC Bibliographic Notification or the OCLC Selection service,
since these are included in the fixed-fee price."
U.S. libraries interested in Cataloging fixed-fee pricing should contact
their OCLC-affiliated regional networks. By early April, networks will be
able to provide libraries with fixed-fee quotes. In Canada, contact OCLC*s
National Sales Division. In Europe, the Middle East and Africa, contact the
local distributor or the OCLC Europe office, located in Birmingham, United
Kingdom, +44 121 456 4656. In Asia and the Pacific region, contact the
local distributor or the OCLC Asia Pacific office in Dublin, Ohio,
+1-614-764-6189. In Latin America and the Caribbean, contact the local
distributor or the OCLC Latin America and the Caribbean office in Dublin,
Ohio, +1-614-761-5196.
