OCLC FIRSTSEARCH BASE PACKAGES EXPAND
DUBLIN, Ohio, Jan. 27, 1997--OCLC has expanded the number of databases
available through OCLC FirstSearch service Base Package subscriptions.
Beginning in January, libraries subscribing to the Base Package for
individual institutions will receive access to OCLC NetFirst, FactSearch and
World Almanac as well as the databases previously available through the Base
Package--WorldCat (the OCLC Online Union Catalog), OCLC ArticleFirst, OCLC
ContentsFirst, OCLC FastDoc, OCLC PapersFirst, OCLC ProceedingsFirst, ERIC,
GPO Monthly Catalog and MEDLINE (in the U.S. only). In addition, World Book
will be added to the Base Package for individual institutions when it
becomes available on FirstSearch, later this year.
Libraries subscribing to the FirstSearch Base Package through groups will
also receive access to NetFirst in addition to the databases that previously
constituted the Base Package.
"Through this expansion, the FirstSearch Base Package provides searchers
with access to an even richer variety of information sources," said Robert
Smith, manager, Business Analysis, OCLC Online Reference Services.
OCLC NetFirst is an authoritative database of Internet-accessible resources.
NetFirst contains bibliographic citations, complete with thorough abstracts
and subject headings, describing a wide variety of Internet resources
including World Wide Web pages, interest groups, FTP sites, electronic
journals and newsletters. Sites are chosen based on their value to
libraries and their users. NetFirst is updated weekly.
Produced by Pierian Press Inc., FactSearch is based on the printed
publication, A Matter of Fact. Each record in FactSearch contains a
bibliographic citation for an item, an abstract containing facts and
statistics with a reference to their original source, and library holdings.
The information in FactSearch comes from over 300 works including
newspapers, periodicals, the Congressional Record and congressional
hearings. In the coming months, URLs will be added to FactSearch records
describing Web sites, and the FirstSearch Web interface will accommodate hot
links to those sites.
The World Almanac database from the K-III Reference Corporation is based on
the print publication, The World Almanac and Book of Facts. This full-text
database covers arts and entertainment, U.S. cities and states, people in
the news, the nations of the world, sports, the environment, vital
statistics, science and technology, computers and taxes, among other
