POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Pius XII Memorial Library, Saint Louis University (MO)
Position Title: Assistant Vatican Film Librarian
Rank/Grade: Temporary Assistant or Associate Professor rank equivalent,
non-tenure track, 12 month position. When project objectives are fulfilled,
the position will continue as a permanent, nontenured faculty position in the
Vatican Film Library focused on cataloging of medieval manuscript
collection.
Salary: Based on credentials and experience, minimum $35,000
Department/Division: Pius XII Memorial Library, Vatican Film Library
Immediate Supervisor: Frances Benham, University Librarian
Position Description and Duties: Work in a joint project of the Vatican Film
Library and Electronic Access to Medieval Manuscripts, a project funded by the
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, to develop core and detailed standards for
cataloging medieval manuscripts in an online environment. This position will
lead the effort to use AACR2 standards and the MARC environment for cataloging
manuscripts in OCLC and RLIN. Participate in project discussion and apply
proposed standards to experimental database of medieval manuscripts. Receive
input from, respond to, and report progress monthly to local administration,
project director, and working group. Draft standards and guidelines, including
AACR2-compatible cataloging rules and MARC encoding guidelines, for review by
the project working group. Conduct website discussion of proposed standards.
Prepare bibliographies useful to manuscript catalogers. Other related duties,
as appropriate.
Requirements: Ph.D. in field relevant to medieval studies, Master's degree in
Library Science from ALA accredited program, successful professional cataloging
experience, including authority control, in OCLC or RLIN, knowledge of Latin
and two other European languages, knowledge of AACR2 and MARC, demonstrated
experience in textual studies using medieval manuscripts, demonstrated ability
to participate in effective work relationships, effective oral and written
communications, demonstrated commitment to professional and scholarly growth
Preferences: Knowledge of DCRB and experience in rare book cataloging
Available: January 3, 1997, or as soon thereafter as possible
