Publications Report 97-02
Date: February 21, 1997
Subject: Computer Diskette Editions of _Braille Book
Review_ and _Talking Book Topics_
The computer diskette editions of _Braille Book Review
(BBR)_ and _Talking Book Topics (TBT)_ are now available as
a permanent part of the NLS program. During the past year,
NLS has provided the computer diskettes as a pilot project.
The pilot was announced to libraries through a publications
report and then to patrons through articles in _BBR_ and
_TBT_. Patrons were encouraged to subscribe and submit
suggestions for improvement.
Patron interest in the format was significant, with
subscriptions beginning at 251 patrons in January 1996 and
increasing steadily throughout the year, with the latest
subscription count at 1,060 patrons. About fifty patrons
submitted comments and suggestions. Almost all were
laudatory and expressed a desire for the format to continue
after the pilot year.
In response to patron recommendations, the diskette will
continue to be presented as formatted ASCII text files that
are readable by the widest possible variety of software and
hardware configurations. Because ASCII files appear
differently on different computers using a variety of
software, it is not practical to provide a printable order
Based on specific suggestions, several minor format changes
have been made to the files on the diskette. The changes
and instructions for use are described in a file titled
"README.TXT" on the diskette.
For the time being, patrons may continue to subscribe to the
computer diskette publication plus another format if they
wish, since an order form is not included. The subscription
code is TBR7.
