I certainly liked it when I first read it in 1972-3 and have recommended
it to my children. For me, it was a kind of reawakening of my interest
in SF/F. I had read all the Heinlein, Clarke, Asimov, P.Anderson, F.
Pohl that was locally available when I was 9-15 years old. Sort of lost
the intense interest for a while, then discovered Tolkien, "Dune", HP
Lovecraft, and (believe it or not!) read my first ERB John Carter books
in 1972 at the age of 26. I've been an avid fan of SF and some F ever since.
I was keenly interested in Roman, Greek, and Norse mythology as a kid,
also, and that interest propelled me into epic-like fantasy, Evangeline
Walton's retelling of the Welsh Mabinagion (sp?),Beowulf, Gilgamesh, the
Arthurian legend, etc. Anyone else get their start with mythology? Is
there a general like/dislike correlation between mythology and SF/F? Oh,
and let's not forget dinosaurs-the first thing to turn me on (after
Annette Funicello!)(when she and I were both still wearing those silly ears)
