>The best book known to me on Tolkien is T.Shippey's *The Road
to Middle Earth*. The best post-Tolkien fantasy known to me
(not that there's much competition: most such imitations miss
the point entirely) is Michael Scott Rohan's *The Winter of
the World*.

I've thought of another good one: Moorcock's Elric series. Most of Moorcock's
Eternal Champion stories are too simplistic, but Elric is full of moral
complexities. The writing is excellent, though some of the books are a trifle
disjointed, having been assembled out of short stories. The saga fits the
definition of "high" fantasy, being both epic and Elvish, but includes strong
elements of Sword and Sorcery, as well, for the more bloodthirsty set.
