Robert - In response to expressed interest, RLG has scheduled an EAD
workshop at UT. So, while I don't know who's using EAD now, I know
you'll not be alone for long.... Ricky

SUBJ: Invitation to The FAST Track, Toronto, Canada, August
7-8, 1997
The Research Libraries Group is pleased to announce an addition to
its regular schedule of FAST workshops. We have the opportunity to
offer the workshop on Finding Aids SGML Training in Toronto, Canada,
on August 7-8, 1997. The University of Toronto has generously
offered to host the workshop in their training lab in the Claude
Bissel Building at 140 George St., Toronto, Ontario M5S 3G6. We
invite you to submit applications now for this session.
In direct support of RLG's goal of building a truly global cultural
resource, this workshop covers the application of EAD (Encoded
Archival Description), the SGML DTD (Standard Generalized Markup
Language Document Type Definition) for archival finding aids. The
workshop is part of the larger FAST Project, a two-year effort to
assist repositories in encoding their finding aids, to make the
finding aids available on RLG's Web server, and to link them via the
856 field to corresponding collection-level records in RLIN.
How does this workshop differ from those offered by other
organizations?
While other institutions offer workshops on SGML, RLG is the first
to provide training for SGML encoding of archival finding aids with
the developing standard, EAD. EAD experts from member institutions
will conduct the workshops. After taking the workshop, participants
will understand the EAD structure, know how to apply EAD elements
and attributes, and be able to make informed decisions regarding
software, Web publishing tools, and institutional implementation of
EAD.
Who should attend?
The workshop is geared toward supervisors who will manage
implementation of EAD as well as staff who will be marking up
finding aids. Trainees must have basic computer skills, e.g., know
how to use a mouse and how to cut and paste text. To maximize the
number of institutions reached with this training, each institution
is invited to nominate no more than two individuals to attend the
workshops. Each workshop is limited to 15 participants. Workshop
participants will be selected on the basis of the questionnaire
below. The workshops are offered at a fee of US$95. per attendee
for RLG members, and US$150 per attendee for non-RLG members to
offset production costs of instructional materials. Travel and per
diem expenses for attendees will be the responsibility of the
participant.
Workshop agenda:
Day 1
I. Introductions/agenda/goals
II. SGML: conceptual overview and hands-on experimentation
III. EAD overview and application
A review of the structure and content of finding aids, and
comparison to the content model of EAD; discussion of the tag
library and other documentation; practice markup on paper and using
computers.
Day 2
IV. EAD overview and application continued: header and front
matter elements
V. Publication on the Web
A practical discussion and demonstration of stylesheets and
navigators and the issues they present.
VI. Implementation
An overview of authoring/editing tools and processes;
discussion of implementation issues such as workflow and
implications for reference service; level of RLG support.
Application questionnaire:
Please e-mail or fax applications for the workshops by April 25,
1997.

If you are nominating two individuals from your institution, please

e-mail as they are admitted. Details regarding housing, daily
schedules, and travel will be supplied at that time. Questions
regarding the workshop can be directed to Anne Van Camp at

How much experience creating archival finding aids does this nominee
have?
Please describe the level of familiarity the nominee has with HTML
and SGML.
An objective of the FAST project is to assemble several hundred
finding aids on the RLG server with links to corresponding
collection-level RLIN records so that we can begin to evaluate use
and access issues. Will the institution be able to provide at least
one marked-up finding aid per trainee to be placed on the RLG server
within
3 months?
6 months?
1 year?
Would your institution be willing to place all archival finding aids
converted with EAD on RLG's server? This would not preclude the
finding aids also living on your own server.
