Subject: Position: Head, Reference Department
University of Rochester seeks a librarian with leadership skills and vision,
grounded in a strong imperative for service, to direct Reference
Department programs in the social sciences and humanities. This position
focuses on the development of library programs in support of instruction,
research, and writing as linked processes benefitting from dialogue and
critical thinking. The Department Head guides and fosters the development
of 7 reference librarian/subject specialists and 3 support staff so that,
together -- by engaging the community -- the department performs an active
academic role in the learning, the teaching, and the research life of the
university. The Department Head is a key participant in a range of
initiatives including: outreach to students and faculty to support the
identification, evaluation, and synthesis of/contribution to knowledge
resources in all formats; development and user instruction on the new
Voyager library information system (installed January *97); and
participation in space planning to make the library architecturally
responsive to evolving models of learning and teaching. The Head
participates in the department*s consultation and instructional services as
well as in a selected humanities or social sciences collection development
responsibility. The Department Head is a direct report to the Assistant
Dean, Public Services, and works in close collaboration with other public
services administrators, with the Head, Collection Development, and with
project-based teams drawn from all library departments.
Qualifications:
--An understanding of the mission of a teaching and research university and
an ability to convey the integral role of the library in this setting
--Experience in teaching the identification, evaluation, interpretation, and
use of knowledge resources
--Administrative and supervisory experience, with evidence of strengths
--Experience with online integrated library systems, campus networks,
electronic information resources and the Internet
--Experience in academic collection development, for print and electronic
resources
--Ability to assess service needs
--Ability to facilitate group decision-making and planning processes
--Ability to foster staff growth and development
--Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal
skills
--MLS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited institution
--Five years* increasingly responsible academic reference experience
--Record of professional activities
Salary dependent upon qualifications -- minimum $45,000 plus benefits:
medical, major medical, dental,& long-term disability insurances. Life
insurance, retirement & investment options. Sick leave. Four-weeks pd.vac;
five floating holidays; twelve calendar holidays. Tuition benefits.
