  RESPONSIBILITIES: Reports to Assistant University Librarian for
  Information Services.  Provides leadership in develop-ing and
  managing  pro-grams and services for on and off campus; provides
  access services with other divisions and branch libraries within the
  university library, distance education sites, Higher Education
  Centers,  corporate and military sites, and the Virginia Beach
  campus to be open in Fall 1998.  Access services include circulation
  and reserves, stacks maintenance, interlibrary loan and document
  delivery, microforms, security, photocopy center contract, financial
  operations of the units and management of two branch libraries.
  Position supervises 17 (3 supervisors, 2 branch coordi-nators, and
  11 staff  members) and approximately  340 hrs. of student
  assistants.   Two branch libraries, the Diehn Composers' Room
  (special collections and the music listening room) and the Hofheimer
  Art Library report to this position, with two coordinators, and
  approximately 40 hrs of student assistants.    Position  will
  analyze departmental organization in view of changing services,
  priorities, and requirements, advances in access technology, and
  developments in library information systems.  Innovative Interfaces
  system recent implementation makes training and full utilization of
  system a priority.  Position includes staff  training and
  development, and collection development assignment. Weekend and
  evening hours as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: An ALA accredited library science degree; a
minimum of  5 years experience at progressively responsible
professional positions; significant supervisory and management
experience; and successful management of library services in a
changing environment.

Desired: knowledge of librarianship and an understanding of the broad
issues facing academic libraries and access services in particular;
comprehensive knowledge of academic libraries' organizational
structures, process, and procedures;   ability to relate tactfully to
faculty, students and staff; responsiveness to the needs  of  the
university and other library units; ability to instill a strong
service orientation; effective and creative leadership; knowledge of
the applications of  information technology  in access services;
effective participation in committees and team-based work; excellent
oral/written communication; negotiating skills with individuals and
groups; ability to use computers effectively.

Also desirable are familiarity with conservation  practices,
knowledge of copyright issues; experience with  microforms;
experiences with  integrated library systems (access services
applications particularly).

Interviewees will be asked to give a brief presentation on
contemporary issues in access services.

SALARY and BENEFITS:  Minimum Salary: $40,000. Benefits include:
TIAA-CREF retirement or Virginia Retirement System, health and life
insurance; 22 vacation days.
