I used to believe that, before I had been asked for the umpteenth
time such incredibly stupid questions that I wondered at the mental
capacity of the questioner.
For example, one is sitting on the sofa, deeply engrossed in a novel
(Philip Pullman's _The Golden Compass_), when a curious passerby
(on their way to the toilet or the refrigerator) asks: "What are you doing?"
Am I the only member of this list who is almost totally
unapproachable when reading a good book?
_The Golden Compass,_ by the way, was published as _His Dark Materials
1: Northern Lights,_ in England, and is the best fantasy novel
that I have read in six years. Has anyone else read it? Are the
subsequent volumes available yet?
Cheers,
Chas
